SUPER FIRM VS EXTRA FIRM MATTRESS: HOW TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE

If you have started shopping for a new mattress and keep seeing terms like firm, super firm and extra firm, it is easy to get confused about which one is actually right for you. These terms are not standardised across the industry, so one brand's super firm can feel different to another's extra firm. Still, there are some real construction differences worth understanding before you buy.

What Makes a Mattress Super Firm

A super firm mattress is built using dense internal materials that resist compression more than a standard mattress. The most common material used for this is coconut coir, also known as coconut pad. This is a natural fibre made from the husks of coconuts, and it has been used in mattress manufacturing for decades because of how little it compresses under body weight.

Unlike foam, which softens over time as the cells break down, coconut coir holds its shape for years. It does not trap heat the way memory foam can either, which makes it a popular choice for hot sleepers who also want a firm surface.

Super firm mattresses are sometimes built as a single coconut pad construction, and sometimes layered with a pocket spring base underneath for some response to movement. Some manufacturers add a thin memory foam or natural latex layer on top, which keeps the mattress super firm overall while softening the immediate surface feel slightly.

What Makes a Mattress Extra Firm

An extra firm mattress takes the support level further again. Where a super firm mattress still has some natural give from the coconut fibre or spring layer, an extra firm mattress is built with a much denser core and minimal cushioning on top. The result is a surface with almost no sink at all.

Extra firm mattresses are often built using high-density natural latex or a Bonnell spring system with very thin padding. The goal is not comfort layers that soften the feel, but a flat, board-like surface that gives maximum resistance.

So Which One Is Firmer

This is where it gets a little subjective. In general, an extra firm mattress is built to be the firmest option a brand offers, with the least amount of give possible. A super firm mattress sits just below that, still very firm, but usually with at least one layer of natural material like coconut pad that has a small amount of compression compared to a pure high-density core.

The easiest way to think about it: if a firm mattress is "solid support with some comfort layers," a super firm mattress is "very little comfort layer, mostly support," and an extra firm mattress is "almost no comfort layer at all."

Who Should Choose Super Firm vs Extra Firm

A super firm mattress tends to suit people who:

  • Sleep mainly on their back or stomach
  • Want a natural fibre construction like coconut pad rather than synthetic foam
  • Prefer a mattress that does not trap heat overnight
  • Are happy with a very firm feel but do not need the absolute firmest option available

An extra firm mattress tends to suit people who:

  • Have tried a firm or super firm mattress and still found it too soft
  • Are recovering from a back or spinal injury and have been told to avoid sinking into a mattress
  • Have previously slept on a hard floor or thin mat and noticed their back felt better
  • Weigh more and need a denser core to avoid sinking past the support layer

Testing Before You Buy

Firmness is genuinely hard to judge from a product description or even a photo. The same density of coconut pad can feel different depending on the spring system underneath it, and what feels extra firm to one person might feel only moderately firm to someone heavier. If you are unsure which level suits you, visiting a store in person and lying on a few different options for a few minutes each is the most reliable way to tell the difference.
