Sleep on a surface that actually holds its shape. Elechome's super firm mattresses use coconut pad, latex and spring builds for real support, night after night. We also stock extra firm and firm options, all available to test in person at our Clayton warehouse before you buy.
Most mattresses are built to conform to your body. A super firm mattress does the opposite. The construction is designed to hold its shape under body weight rather than compress around it, which keeps your spine in a neutral position from the moment you lie down to the moment you wake up.
The material that makes this possible in most super firm mattresses is coconut coir, also called coconut pad. This is a dense natural fibre pressed from the husks of coconuts, and it behaves very differently to foam. Foam compresses under weight and softens over time as the cell structure breaks down. Coconut coir maintains its density for years because it is a natural fibre, not a synthetic cell structure, so the feel you test in the store is close to the feel you will still have five years later.
Coconut coir is also naturally breathable. Unlike memory foam, which traps body heat and is a common complaint among Australian sleepers through summer, coconut pad allows air to move freely through the fibre. For people who sleep warm, this is as important as the firmness level itself.

Who Should Sleep on a Super Firm Mattress
Super firm mattresses are not for everyone, and that is worth being honest about. The people who benefit most tend to fall into clear categories.
Good fit
Back & Stomach Sleepers
Both positions work best with a flat, stable surface that holds the spine in a straight line. A softer mattress lets the hips sink and pulls the spine out of alignment overnight.
Good fit
Heavier Sleepers (90kg+)
A mattress rated firm for a lighter person can feel like a medium for someone heavier. A super firm or coconut pad core maintains its resistance at higher body weight.
Good fit
People with Back Pain
Super firm mattresses provide orthopaedic-level support that prevents the hips from sinking out of alignment during the night, which is one of the main causes of waking up stiff or sore.
Use caution
Side Sleepers
A very firm surface does not allow enough give at the shoulder and hip. This can create pressure rather than support. Testing in person before buying is strongly recommended.
If you have previously slept on a hard floor or thin mat and noticed your back felt better the next morning, a super firm mattress is almost certainly the right direction.
Firm vs Super Firm vs Extra Firm
All three firmness levels provide more support than a medium mattress, but they differ in how much the surface gives when you lie on it.
Firmness
What it feels like
Best suited to
Firm
Solid support with some give from the comfort layer on top
Back and stomach sleepers transitioning from softer beds, lighter sleepers
Super Firm
Minimal comfort layer, support structure close to the surface
Back and stomach sleepers, heavier sleepers, people with lower back pain
Extra Firm
Almost no give, denser core, closest to a flat solid surface
People who find super firm still too soft, those on medical advice to avoid sinking
The construction materials across our firm, super firm and extra firm range each behave differently. Understanding them helps you choose the right model.
Coconut coir (coconut pad)The densest and most durable material in the range. Provides a flat surface with very little compression, does not soften over time the way foam does, and is naturally breathable. Particularly well suited to the Australian climate as it does not trap heat. The defining material in most super firm models.
Natural latexProcessed from rubber tree sap into a dense, responsive foam. Provides firm support with a small amount of natural flex. Hypoallergenic, breathable and typically outlasts synthetic foam by several years. Used as both a support core and a comfort layer across different models.
Pocket springsIndividually wrapped steel coils that respond independently to weight and movement. Reduces motion transfer across the bed, making these models better suited to shared beds. Used as a base layer in several combination builds alongside coconut pad and latex.
Memory foamUsed as a thin top layer in some super firm combination mattresses. Adds a small amount of surface softness without affecting the overall firmness of the mattress underneath.
Bonnell springsA traditional open coil spring system, interconnected across the mattress. Provides a responsive, bouncy firm feel. The most affordable construction type in the range. Best suited to single sleepers or those who prioritise firmness and budget over motion isolation.
Tested In Store Since 2012
Every mattress in this collection has been selected and tested by our team at our Clayton warehouse before listing. We have stocked firm, super firm and extra firm mattresses since 2012, and the range reflects what we have seen actually work for customers who come in with back pain, firmness preferences, and sleep issues that softer mattresses have not solved.
Our firm and super firm mattresses are one of the most visited sections of the warehouse floor. Customers come in specifically to test coconut pad mattresses because the feel is genuinely difficult to judge from a photo or description alone. The difference between a firm and super firm mattress is something you feel in about ten seconds when you lie on both.

Firm Mattress FAQs
What is a super firm mattress?
A super firm mattress uses dense construction materials, most commonly coconut coir fibre, to create a sleep surface that compresses very little under body weight. Unlike foam mattresses that soften over time, coconut coir holds its density and feel for years. It suits people who find standard firm mattresses still have too much give, back and stomach sleepers, and heavier sleepers who need more resistance than a firm mattress provides.
Who should sleep on a super firm mattress?
Back sleepers, stomach sleepers, heavier sleepers over 90kg, and people dealing with chronic lower back pain or spinal issues tend to benefit most from super firm mattresses. Side sleepers should approach with caution, as the reduced surface give can create pressure at the shoulder and hip without enough cushioning to compensate.
Is a super firm mattress good for back pain?
For many people, yes. A super firm mattress prevents the hips and lower back from sinking into the mattress overnight, which is one of the most common causes of waking up stiff or sore. However, the right firmness depends on your sleep position and body type. If you have a diagnosed spinal condition, speak to a physiotherapist before committing to the firmest option.
What is the difference between firm, super firm and extra firm?
A firm mattress has solid support with comfort layers built in, providing some give when you lie on it. A super firm mattress removes most of that comfort layer, bringing the support structure much closer to the surface. An extra firm mattress goes further again, with minimal cushioning and a denser core that leaves almost no give at all. All three are available at Elechome, starting from $299.
Are coconut pad mattresses good for hot sleepers?
Yes. Coconut coir is naturally breathable and does not retain body heat the way memory foam does. Air circulates freely through the fibre, which helps regulate sleep temperature. For warm sleepers in Australia, this is a practical advantage of coconut pad super firm mattresses beyond just the firmness level.
Is a firm mattress right for me if I am a side sleeper?
Generally not if you are considering super firm or extra firm. Side sleeping puts most of your body weight through the shoulder and hip, which need some give in the mattress to avoid pressure buildup. A standard firm mattress is usually more appropriate for side sleepers than a super firm. If you are a side sleeper with back pain, testing both options in person at our Clayton warehouse is the best way to find what actually works for your body.
How long does a super firm coconut pad mattress last?
Coconut coir maintains its density much longer than foam because it is a natural fibre rather than a synthetic cell structure. A well-made coconut pad mattress will typically hold its firmness for significantly longer than a foam mattress of comparable price, which is part of why it has remained a preferred construction for super firm mattresses despite being an older material.
Can I test the mattresses in person before buying?
Yes. Our full range of firm, super firm and extra firm mattresses is available on the floor at our Clayton warehouse in Melbourne. We strongly recommend testing in person before buying, particularly for super firm and extra firm options where the feel is difficult to judge from a photo or product description alone.
