What Is a Firm Mattress and Who Is It For

A firm mattress is a mattress where the support core and comfort layers are designed to resist compression rather than conform to your body shape. Instead of sinking in, you sleep on top of the surface, which keeps your spine in a straighter, more neutral position through the night.

Firm mattresses are most commonly recommended for back sleepers and stomach sleepers. Both positions put the spine in a naturally flatter alignment, and a firm surface supports that rather than letting the hips or lower back sag. Heavier sleepers also tend to do better on a firm mattress because a medium or soft surface compresses more under higher body weight, which can throw the spine out of alignment even if it would not for a lighter person.

At Elechome our firm mattresses include Bonnell spring, coconut pad and natural latex options. Each one is built to hold its shape over years of use rather than softening and losing support after 12 to 18 months the way cheaper foam mattresses often do.

Extra Firm Mattresses - What They Are and Who They Suit

An extra firm mattress takes the support level further. Where a standard firm mattress still has some comfort layers on top, an extra firm mattress is built with a much denser core and reduced cushioning, so the surface has very little give when you lie on it.

This suits people who find even firm mattresses still feel too soft, people recovering from back or spinal injuries who need a flat and stable surface, and anyone who has previously slept on a hard floor or futon and found it helped their back.

Luxury Natural Latex Extra Firm Mattress BD9015 - this uses a high-density natural latex core which provides firm resistance with a small amount of natural flex. Unlike synthetic foam, natural latex maintains its density over time and does not develop body impressions the same way. Available in queen and king sizes.

Super Firm/Extra Firm/Hard Bonnell Spring Mattress BD010 - uses a Bonnell spring system with minimal padding layers on top. It is the closest to a hard feel in the collection and the most affordable option in the range. Available in single, double, queen and king.

Super Firm Mattresses - Construction, Materials and Options

A super firm mattress sits between a standard firm and an extra firm. The key difference is in the construction - super firm mattresses typically use denser internal materials, most commonly coconut coir fibre padding, which compresses very little under body weight and holds its shape over years of use.

Coconut coir (also called coconut pad) is a natural fibre material made from the husks of coconuts. It has been used in mattress manufacturing for decades and is well regarded for its density, breathability and durability. It does not trap heat the way memory foam can, and it does not soften over time the way fibre or synthetic foam layers do.

Super Firm Coconut Pad Mattress BD20 - a pure coconut pad construction with a firm, flat feel and strong edge support. Good for people who want a natural material and a consistent firm surface throughout. Available in double, queen and king.

Double-Sided Coconut Padding Super Firm Spring Mattress BD1716 - combines a pocket spring base with coconut padding on both sides, so you can flip the mattress to extend its life. The spring layer adds some response to movement which makes it a better option if you share a bed. Available in double, queen and king.

Memory Foam + Coconut Pad + Pocket Spring Super Firm Mattress BD1512-1 - a layered construction that combines a pocket spring base, coconut pad middle layer and memory foam top. Super firm overall but with a small amount of surface comfort from the memory foam. Available in double, queen and king.

Natural Latex + Coconut Pad + Pocket Spring Super Firm Mattress BD1904B - natural latex on top with coconut pad and pocket springs below for a super firm feel with the longevity and breathability of latex. Available in double, queen and king.

Materials Used in Our Firm and Extra Firm Mattresses

Understanding what goes into a firm mattress helps you choose the right one. Here is what we use across the range:

Coconut coir/coconut pad - a dense natural fibre that provides a hard, flat surface with very little compression. Breathable, durable and naturally resistant to moisture and odour. The firmest material option in the range.

Natural latex - tapped from rubber trees and processed into a dense foam. Firm but with a small amount of natural responsiveness. Hypoallergenic, breathable and very durable. Natural latex mattresses typically last longer than synthetic alternatives.

Pocket springs - individual springs each encased in their own fabric pocket. They respond independently to movement, which reduces motion transfer across the bed. Used as a base layer in several models to add airflow and some response to the mattress.

Memory foam - used as a top comfort layer in some models. In a firm mattress context the memory foam layer is thin, adding just enough surface softness without compromising the firm support underneath.

Bonnell springs - a traditional interconnected spring system. Affordable and durable, providing a bouncy, firm feel. Used in the BD010, the most affordable model in the range.
